Pepys-Map: 30th July 1661

In today’s entry, the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel has a singing lesson.
  • He goes to Whitehall and Westminster, where he comments on politics.
  • He goes on to the King’s Wardrobe, meeting the King on the way.
  • At the Wardrobe, he dines with Lady Montagu, and meets his cousin Thomas.
  • He returns to his office, where he discusses Tangier.
  • Back at home, he meets his friend Henry Moore, with whom he walks to the City, and then on alone to Fleet Street.
  • In Fleet Street he meets a Mr Salisbury and goes to a tavern with him where they additionally meet Richard Hoare.
  • Finally, he returns home and writes to his father and patron.

Pepys-Map: 28th July 1661

The entry for today is quite short. The Pepys are visited by Mrs Ramsey, with whom they attend church, and then take back home to dine. They attend church again in the afternoon, and return this time with Sir William Penn. Elizabeth Pepys then leaves with Penn to visit his daughter, about whom she has disparaging remarks to make.

Pepys-Map: 27th July 1661

In today’s entry Samuel spends the day visiting friends. The following events are modelled:

  • Samuel goes to Westminster, where he hears a guitar recital.
  • He goes on the Westminster Hall, where he has a discussion with George Montagu.
  • He joins his wife and a number of friends at the Kings Wardrobe, where he enjoys a venison pasty.
  • With his wife, he takes Jemima Carteret and Paulina Montagu to see his house, going via London Bridge to show them the ships.
  • He sees the Montague daughter home with his wife, and they return to the Seething Lane house.
  • Finally, he writes to his father.

Pepys-Map: 24th July 1661

From today’s entry the following events are modelled:

  • Elizabeth tells Samuel of a theft.
  • Samuel and Elizabeth travel to Whitehall, and Samuel on to his cousin Thomas Pepys where they discuss Thomas’s father’s will. They encounter one Sir George Lane, who is interested in leasing the house (part of the estate).
  • Finally, Samuel travels around a bit, visiting the Wardrobe, Lady Jemima Montagu, popping back home, to the office, and finally back home again.

Pepys-Map: 23rd July 1661

From today’s entry the following events are modelled:

  • Samuel visits William Penn and William Batten – although it is not crystal clear from the text, I have modelled this as two separate visiting events.
  • Samuel goes to Westminster Hall, during which Samuel meets Ann Mitchell (a bookseller at Westminster).
  • A performance of the play “Brennoralt” at the Theatre Royal, attended by Samuel and also by Barbara Villiers (the King’s mistress – a new association type ‘lover-of’ has been introduced to model this relationship).
  • A discussion between Samuel and his uncle Thomas about the estate of Robert Pepys.
  • Samuel meets meets with his aunt Mary Wight.
